Muay Thai Program

At Texas Powerhouse MMA, we effectively translate the fundamentals of Muay Thai to be used successfully in our own style of Mixed Martial Arts. TXP utilizes a five level Muay Thai system.

Level 1*Beginner techniques and cardio

Level 2*Advanced techniques and cardio

Level 3  Introduction to sparring

Level 4 Sparring takes place during the Team Training

Level 5  -  Earned after long term participation in Team Training

All new students starting in the TXP Muay Thai program will begin in the Level 1 class. In order to move up to the next level you must pass the level certification test. This test is held from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. on the first Saturday of every month. For testing, students will need their own boxing gloves, hand wraps and shin guards. You must sign up at least 7 days prior to the test date in order to participate. Once a student does pass, he/she will be able to start training in the next level.

*No sparring in either the first or second levels.

History

aaronkickMany years ago, when the country of Thailand was in the process of forming, Muay Thai (Thai Boxing in English) grew out of necessity from fighting off neighboring countries. During this time period, only short range weapons were available for use in battle. This led to battles being fought primarily at close range.  Thus, the use of practical weapons such as the head, fists, elbows and feet were utilized.  This is believed to be the main reason that Muay Thai Boxing became a practical form of self defense, and eventually the national sport of Thailand.

Thai Boxing became organized in the early 1920’s as the use of weight classes and gloves were implemented. Muay Thai boxing is also called “The Art of Eight Limbs” due to its use of strikes from the fists, elbows, knees, and feet.  Because of this system’s extreme conditioning requirements and strict fundamentals, Thai Boxing is proven in the world of Mixed Martial Arts as a very effective and dominant style.  Another aspect of this style that sets it apart from other styles is ‘the clinch.’  ‘The clinch’ is used when two fighters get within close range of each other, while one wraps his hands behind the other’s neck, pulling his opponent’s head down.  This is a very dominant position that allows one opponent to control another, leaving the controlled opponent vulnerable to knee strikes to the head and body.  Because Texas Powerhouse MMA believes in this art’s superiority over other stand-up styles, it is understandable why all of our students and fighters train in Muay Thai.
